What is Unspoken – The Dialogue between you and these Disparate Elements
Graphic Design, Publication
Portuguese transdisciplinary artist Tatiana Macedo works across the expanded fields of installation, photography, cinema and sound.
I have been commissioned by the artist to develop this catalogue book for the occasion of Macedo's exhibition within the International Studio Programme at Künstlerhaus Bethanien.
Macedo wanted the book to be both retrospective and actual, documenting her past and recent projects as well as the ongoing project started within the residency. The publication is divided into three parts, consisting of an essay section — with contributions by Ulrich Ziemons, Birgit Hein and João Silvério, — a selection of Macedo's growing archive of photography — shots she relentlessly takes in parallel to the projects she is working on, — and a final section consisting of a conversation between the artist and curator Emanuele Guidi.
The book's three-part layout plays with the rhythms and values found in the artist’s work — the contrasts between permanence and impermanence, the subtle gestures, the silence and stillness found behind that which is visible — in an alternation between the use of black & white and colour, typefaces and grids, which nevertheless preserve that sense of silence, of stillness and slowness.
